Lynemouth

The four framed steel plates titled “Simonside Forest”, “Heaton”, “Lynemouth” and “Hadrian’s Wall” are effectively landscapes. They show how the same base material – a 30cm x 30cm piece of virgin steel, taken from the same donor sheet – placed and collected on the same dates last winter in four different locations were transformed in dramatically different ways. The materiality is provided by the weather, the rust an authentic reflection of the conditions in that time and place. They are framed in seasoned ash as a nod to classic landscape presentation with the “live” edges top and bottom recalling the elaborate gilt frames on old masters.
